The morning of November 1, 2016. Standing in the kitchen of my home in Berkeley, having a coffee with my son Cameron, and the phone rang.
The phone call informed me my mother was in a coma in the hospital in Southern California.
My mother's near-death, not-quite-all-the-way recovery, the 2016 Presidential election, more medical drama with my mother, the Covid pandemic, my mother's death in June 2020, the 2020 Presidential election, the January 6 insurrection in 2021, more drama, the straining of Democratic institutions, the move towards the Far Right both in America and Israel. My sister's illness, the ravages of MS leaving her bed-bound, unable to move anything below her waist. October 7, 2023 in Israel. Mass outpourings of latent and primary antisemitism come home to roost. More drama, more trauma.
If I could turn back time, and not answer the phone call, would the rest of it have happened anyway?
